Athena Restaurant Paintings
The eight paintings along the walls of the Athena restaurant are recreations of the classical
renaissance painters Botticelli and Titian.
Each painting portrays the original work of either an entire painting or a section of a painting. The recreations are
Painting Titles and Descriptions
Titles and descriptions starting from the painting,"The Birth of Aphrodite," (opposite of the restaurant entryway), continuing counterclockwise:
1. "The Birth of Aphrodite:" Botticelli, 1478 - Center of the original painting depicting the creation of Aphrodite (Venus) by Nature with its four elements and union of spirit and matter.
2. "The North Winds:" Botticelli - Left side of the original painting, "The Birth of Aphrodite."
The arrival of Aphrodite is propelled by Zephyr and Chloris also considered to be Pallas and the Centaur.
3. "Bachus and Ariadna:" Titian, 1522-23 - The mortal Ariadna wanders by the shore after being abandoned by Thesus. Here she is discovered by Bacchus and his rowdy followers.
4. "The Calmuny of Apelles:" Botticelli, 1495 - Right side detail of the original painting. This was a very popular story subject in the 15th century. The painting for Apelles to vindicate himself from the lies told by his rival to king Ptolemy. Here king Midas with donkey ears of a bad judge sits on his throne with Ignorance and Suspicion extends his hand to Envy who leads Calumny. Deceit weaves flowers in Calumny's hair.
5. "The Three Graces:" Botticelli - A detail section of the left side of the original painting, "Primavera," depicts the Three Graces dancing as one of several events occurring in the original.
6. "Primavera:" Botticelli, 1477-78 - A portrait from the figure of Primavera on the right center of the original painting, "Primavera." Primavera (Flora) becomes the ³Hour² of spring and scatters flowers on the world.
7. "Venus & Adonis:" Titian, 1554 - Venus is trying to restrain Adonis who rushes past her on his way to hunt after a night of love.
8. "Primavera:" Botticelli - Right side of the original painting, "The Birth of Aphrodite." Homer's "Ovid" describes Hour (Primavera) handing a cloak to Aphrodite after her creation.

B. "The Woman Taken In Adultery" (from the Bible), after Rembrandt, oil and acrylic on canvas, 7'-6' x 12 feet, Santa Ana Historical Performing Arts and Events Center, CA, in the Gentleman's Bar.
C. "The Departure of the Sunammite Woman" (from the Bible), after Rembrandt, oil and acrylic on canvas, 5'h x 5', 25 sq. ft..
D. "Sampson¹s Wedding Feast" (from the Bible), after Rembrandt, oil and acrylic on canvas, 5'h x 3', 15 sq. ft..
